In Elliot’s nursery, there hangs a wall of artwork: quotes from one of the most committed Christian women of our time. They challenge me, renew my perspective, and convict me over and over. This woman showed us what trusting God looked like in the midst of great trials and living with great peace that only comes from above.
Her name is Elisabeth Elliot.
When we chose our daughter’s name, we made it about the kind of person we wanted her to be and someone worthy of emulating. Elliot was named after Jim and Elisabeth Elliot, missionaries and Christians who lived with extreme devotion and trust in the Lord. If you don’t know their story, I suggest you learn more about them from the many books she authored – you will be amazed and challenged.
Just this week, on June 15th, our daughter’s namesake passed away. Praise God for her life and example.
In this great Christianity Today article remembering her, Kay Warren says,
Elisabeth, thank you for shaping me into the woman I am, for modeling for me what it looks like to follow hard after Jesus, for never walking away from God in your darkest days and for holding true to your faith to the end. Thank you on behalf of millions of other women – young and old – who found in you a woman worthy to emulate.
Having been shaped by her life and her writing, I am one of those women thankful for her life, as I hope my daughter will be one day as well.
